Jay-Z (Shawn Corey Carter) was born on December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. As an American rapper, he is one of the most influential and wealthy figures of modern hip-hop music. Eight of his albums were charted at the top of the Billboard Top 200 List.
Jay-Z originated from Brooklyn and began his career in mid-1990, performing with rapper Notorious BIG. His performing style was almost entirely based on improvisation. Between 2003 and 2006 he remade his few tracks with compositions with the rock band Linkin Park and went on a U.S. tour with R. Kelly, another hip-hop artist.
Thanks to the numerous scandals that accompany the activities of Jay-Z, he became one of the most popular hip-hop artists of the 2000's. Back in 1999, Jay-Z rapped on the Mariah Carey song, Heartbreaker, which landed on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2004, Jay returned to the top of the U.S. pop charts with the track, Crazy in Love, written in collaboration with his then-girlfriend, now -wife, Beyoncé. He is the founder and owner of the record label Roc-A-Fella Records, General Manager of Def Jam record label, and co-owner of the NBA New Jersey Nets team.
