U2 is a rock band from Dublin, Ireland which was formed in 1976. From the mid 80's, U2 has been one of the most popular and successful bands in the world. It’s sold nearly 140 million copies of their albums. By the year 2006 they already won twenty-two Grammy Awards, more than any other group in the world.

The band was formed when Bono (vocals and guitar), The Edge (guitar, keyboards and vocals) and Adam Clayton (bass), responded to an ad posted by Larry Mullen, Jr. At that time they were teenagers and not professional musicians. By the mid-80's they released 4 albums and gained true fans, mostly because of the unique musicality, the guitarist, Edge, and Bono and his deep voice and the great depth of meaning lyrics. They acquired the status of stars with the release of the 1987 album The Joshua Tree, which is often called one of the greatest rock albums.

In the early 90's, they responded to a revolution in alternative and dance music which, in their opinion, was the stagnation of the music and released the album Achtung Baby and a grand show called Zoo TV. At this time, they were constantly experimenting, exploring different musical directions.

At the beginning of the 21st century U2 played more traditional music, using their previous achievements and continued to enjoy success with the public and critics. In 2004 the group took 22nd place out of 100 in the ranking of the Best Artists of All Time in Rolling Stone magazine. In 2005, they were included in the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

Members of the group are well-known for their political activities in the field of human rights and social justice participating in Amnesty International, Make Poverty History, ONE, Live Aid, Live 8, DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade in Africa) and Bono and The Edge's Music Rising.
