The Capital One Bowl 2011 had made its choice on SEC teams that will participate in it after the BCS bowls, and everything pointed to the selection of last year's BCS national champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
In addition the bowl ties in with the Big 10, and signs pointed to Michigan State to be the bowl's choice, making an alluring game between 2 teams uniformly successful in the regular season.

Alabama actually could have placed itself for a BCS bowl, but due to their lost to some tough SEC games down the stretch, highly to Auburn in the Iron Bowl it didn’t happen. Nevertheless they can still boast a talented team, and Crimson Tide fans are able to get to Orlando, so the selection makes sense.
