The Florida Gators men's basketball team represents the University of Florida, which is located in Gainesville, Florida. The Gators play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The team plays their home games in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center which is located on the university's campus.
The Gators are the winners of 2 national championships - the 2006 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and 2007 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. They are considered to be the 1st team since the Duke Blue Devils to achieve this and the first one to ever do it with the same starting line-up.
The current head coach of the Gators is Billy Donovan, who had completed his 11th season as coach after agreeing to coach for the NBA's Orlando Magic in 2007. It was revealed on June 3 that Donovan asked to be freed from his contract with the Magic to return to the Gators. He was soon thereafter released from the contract and reintroduced as the coach of the Gators.
The team failed to make the NCAA Tournament in 2008 (they were eliminated by UMass in a semi-final game of the NIT) and 2009 (the Gators were eliminated by Penn State in a quarter-final game of the NIT). In 2010, the Gators were eliminated in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament by BYU in double overtime.
